At this week’s Climate Ambition Summit in New York City, UN Secretary-General Antony Gutierrez told the audience, “Humanity has opened the gates of hell…. Climate action is dwarfed by the scale of the challenge…. But the future is not fixed…. We must make up time lost to foot-dragging, arm-twisting and the naked greed of entrenched interests raking in billions from fossil fuels.”
While governments and corporate interests share a huge amount of climate crisis blame, the fossil fuel industry needs investments from lending institutions and insurers to maintain their deadly-oiled machine. We can influence their behavior with our own financial resources. Where we bank, invest, get credit cards, and obtain insurance makes a difference. When we move our money from institutions that fund fossil fuels into those that won’t, we are contributing to climate solutions, not more destruction.
