Ways to Give

“Send us out into the world in peace, and grant us courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart.”  – Post-Communion Prayer

Each Sunday, toward the end of the Mass, we hear some variation of this call to action, a weekly reminder that following Christ is no casual pastime but an active responsibility to use the gifts we’ve been given to do the work God is calling us to do.  Stewardship therefore, is about how we give back to God in thanksgiving for the many gifts we’ve been given.  Here at St. Paul’s we live out this pledge through giving of our financial resources, caring for our environment, living sustainably, serving others, and thoughtfully planning for our legacy.

And as with other spiritual practices such as regular prayer or worship, St. Paul’s promotes our growth as stewards through a series of campaigns throughout the year focusing on different aspects of stewardship:

Annual Pledge

We believe that financial stewardship is an integral part of our spiritual journey and our relationship with God. We also believe strongly that our standard of giving should reflect our standard of living and ask each parishioner to consider making a pledge that is both responsible and significant based on his or her financial situation.

The In-Gathering, or “Pledge Sunday,” is a chance for everyone who considers St. Paul’s their spiritual home to come to the altar and make a pledge —an estimate of your giving for the coming year. A pledge may be made any time of year. It’s a wonderful opportunity to consider the blessings of your life, and become a partner in the mission and ministry of St. Paul’s!

Stewardship is a wonderful opportunity to take stock in the many blessings in our lives and reflect on how we are feeling called to give back in thanksgiving.  As a practical matter, it’s when we as members of this faith community begin considering how we can make a financial commitment to give back to God through the mission and ministry of St. Paul’s Cathedral; to give so that we may change the lives of others.  As you consider your pledge, please know that it is only through the weekly giving of our members, that St. Paul’s Cathedral can present dynamic programs and activities that enrich and transform lives, beautiful worship and music offerings, children and youth programs, comprehensive pastoral care, adult education, spiritual guidance, small group activities, ministries, and much more.  Unlike many cathedrals, nearly 80% of our operating income comes to us through the weekly offering.  Put simply, every pledge counts, and every pledge matters.

At St. Paul’s, we truly believe that giving is as much a spiritual practice as prayer, worship or service.  As Christians, we are called to give out of thanksgiving for the many blessings we have received and as a reminder, that we are but managers, or stewards, of God’s gifts.

Legacy Giving

What is Legacy Giving or Legacy Stewardship?

One way to answer that is to look at it in the context of the three types of giving or stewardship:

Ordinary Stewardship – Our weekly or monthly giving or annual pledge as well as our regular giving of our time and talent or service to others;

Extraordinary Stewardship – Memorial, tribute, capital gifts or other special gifts; and

Legacy Stewardship – Estate or planned giving through a such as bequests, trusts or other estate planning gifts.

Ordinary Stewardship is the regular practice of returning to God a portion of all that God has given us. It involves teaching ourselves how to create a life built upon the notion that all that we have is a gift from God. This includes teaching the holy habits of keeping Sabbath and tithing and the concept that giving regularly of our time, talent, and money to God’s work on this earth is as much a spiritual practice as prayer and worship.

Legacy Stewardship is the way in which we address the matter of disposing of the accumulation of our lifetime. Who will use your “stuff” when you no longer need it? It is the opportunity to leave a planned gift that constitutes both a legacy to generations yet unborn and a final witness to those whom we hold most dear.  Through a legacy gift to the Cathedral endowment, your estate is combined with those that have come before and after, so that together we will forever empower and feed mission and ministry of St. Paul’s for generations to come.

Extraordinary Stewardship involves the special occasions that arise in the life of Christian communities that call us to give beyond our ordinary habit. They involve increased risk and encourage us to experiment with sacrificial giving in order to help the community realize an especially important goal.  Typically, these arise in the context of a capital campaign when the congregation seeks to take on something new or renew or refurbish its facilities, so that its ministry will be expanded and strengthened for the generations to come.
