Madonna and Child

This is by the Venetian painter Bellini. It’s The Madonna and Child from the Frari Triptych in the sacristy of the Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice.

An excellent commentary on this painting can be found at the blog Counterlight’s Peculiars, written by painter and art history professor Douglas Blanchard, aka Counterlight. (He’s also a thurifer at St Luke in the Fields, New York.) It’s worth stopping in regularly to Counterlight’s blog for outstanding lessons in art history, lavishly illustrated.
