Catching up with Chris (part 1)

(This is the first in a series of blogs I will be posting this summer as part of my field study at Episcopal Community Services.) Why is the Canon for Congregational Development at St. Paul’s Cathedral doing a “Field Ed” at Episcopal Community Studies (or ECS as it is known) and why am I blogging … READ MORE…

Update on same sex marriages

Writing to the Diocesan Clergy in their monthly newsletter, Bishop Mathes has tweaked the policy regarding same sex marriages in the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego.  There are now no differences in how same sex and opposite sex couples are treated. It has now been one year since the Supreme Court opened the way for … READ MORE…

A Week in the Icon Writing Life

When we all lived in Laguna Beach in the 70s and were busy buying new telephones (remember those?) that had keypads instead of dials, he maintained his dial phone until the bitter end until the phone company … READ MORE…

Color blast

The walls of St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, San Diego are bathed in blue, purple and red bursts and swirls. Shimmering jello-colors wash the gothic window thicknesses and the round rose window projects a fuzzy, traveling oval. When I am a docent at the cathedral, often alone, the sun’s movement causes an ever-changing color display. The … READ MORE…

Travels with Prius

I’m in Steinbeck country, dead center Monterey and only blocks from Cannery Row and the site of Tortilla Flat. A few miles away, Salinas provided Steinbeck with the setting for East of Eden. Later in his life, he wrote Travels with Charley (his poodle), but not having a dog to sit in my front seat, … READ MORE…
