Vision 4 Mission at the Forum

We had a forum on Sunday with an update from the Vision for Mission (V4M) committee, and provided feedback on the ideas and values they are articulating.   Were you there?  What do you think? After vigorous discussion, the word “obedient” was replaced with “Grounded in”

Church Women

There has been much well-deserved acclaim about the elevation of a woman to the episcopate of the Church of England, and I cannot help but reflect on the books by Anthony Trollope whose interest in the Diocese of Barchester (fictitious but likely based on a real one) centered around the bishop’s wife, the redoubtable Mrs. … READ MORE…

The Sunday Sermon: We preach Christ Crucified

“Jesus said to the twelve, ‘They will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues; and you will be dragged before governors and kings because of me.’” Happy Cathedral Day! The Gospel for the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul isn’t exactly filled with sweetness and light. It speaks of persecution, … READ MORE…

2015 Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting of St Paul’s Cathedral was held on Sunday 18 January.  In addition to the serious business of voting on finance, staff reports, and strategic updates, we enjoyed the presentation of the Robinson Cross, named for the first rector of St Paul’s (before it was a Cathedral).  This is an honor given to … READ MORE…

The Sunday Sermon: Glorifying God with My Body

I’m conducting an informal poll this morning and am wondering if anyone has recently woken up, rubbed their eyes, and looked into the mirror and thought, “Wow, I am marvelously made!” Hmm. Not many. Report from People’s Warden: Thank you Judy!

A final message from Judy Moore, who is retiring as people’s warden:  As the People’s Warden of St. Paul’s Cathedral, I am on the Cathedral’s Chapter (Board of Directors, if you will) which primarily oversees the finances as well as the buildings and grounds of the Cathedral. I serve on the Endowment and Finance Committees. … READ MORE…

Moral Dilemma

For the second or third night this season, a homeless woman has lodged herself inside the entry way to our condo building. It provides a fairly good shelter: doors to the walkway close but don’t lock, and the entry has plenty of room for someone to lie down in it. It’s almost a private room; … READ MORE…

The Sunday Sermon: Out of Egypt

Some years ago, the Washington Post ran an article about the Washington Auto Show, which takes place annually just before Christmas. A star of the show was the Mercedes G-Class sport utility vehicle. Someone in the admiring crowd was quoted as follows: “Jesus would love to drive one of these … if he’s Jesus here-and-now … READ MORE…
