Dear St. Paul’s,
This week is very special for your cathedral and the diocese, as we have been hosting the Episcopal Communicator’s Conference (https://episcopalcommunicators.org/). Episcopal Communicators is a self-supporting organization of communication professionals working in the Episcopal Church for dioceses, congregations and organizations, and they gather once a year in-person to learn, create community, and share insights. The theme for this year is “Anchored in Hope,” which is something that we can all probably relate to these days.
While most of the main events occur at a hotel and conference center downtown, Tuesday evening, the conference goers gathered in our nave for the Eucharist that starts the main events. Bishop Susan gave a rousing sermon, honoring the work that communicators do in the name of the Gospel. We then had a brief reception for hospitality’s sake. We welcome them again this evening (Thursday) for a celebratory dinner and Polly Bond awards (it’s like the Oscar’s for Episcopal communicator’s, and named after a legendary Episcopal communicator).
Wayne, our own communicator, will be attending the conference, I will be it’s chaplain, and the whole staff is supporting this event in one form or another. I am grateful for our staff, the board and members of the Episcopal Communicator’s, and our diocesan staff—especially Director for Diocesan Communications Cris Tumilty, for all they have done to make this a wonderful week in San Diego for our visitors. Their collective efforts have led to a completely sold out registration for this week (150 communicators!). San Diego wasn’t a tough sell, it seems!
One last note on communications here at St. Paul’s: you may have noticed that we are getting more aerial shots for our visuals, that’s because your AV team now has a licensed drone. Some people have been asking fair questions about whether this legal or approved of locally. We want to assure you that Mark Sanzi, our AV administrator, has gone through all necessary steps to ensure that this is indeed a legal drone, and I offer this FAQ sheet for anyone with concerns so that they may be assuaged (Click here for details).
Thank you, St. Paul’s, for all you are and all you do in our common life of discipleship. Whether it’s this conference, or next week’s North American Cathedral Dean’s conference, or in drone footage, we love showing this place off, and thank you for being so marvelous as to be shown!
Gratefully yours,
Richard
