Music for All as a Gift from God

Hello,
My name is Frank Borik, and I’m writing today about the revitalization of the Friends of Cathedral Music ministry! (FoCM) After reflection and discernment, I have volunteered to lead this ministry, and I’m very excited to be participating in the growth that the Music Department will be undergoing as we finish construction of the new music spaces and begin to move in.

In the past, the Friends of Cathedral Music has supported the Music Department by assisting with hospitality, coordinating with visiting choirs, and through generous donations, underwritten special musical events such as concerts and bringing in guest musicians. And while all of that will continue and expand, I felt that the FoCM could do more in terms of outreach: we have SUCH fantastic musical offerings that it is a shame to keep them for ourselves. Thus, the overall objective of our FoCM efforts will be to “Proclaim the Good News through high-quality music as a blessing from God to the Cathedral and to our community.”

As a licensed Lay Evangelist and member of the Evangelism Committee, I saw an opportunity to duplicate the success of our evangelism efforts at our Evensong services, so you will be seeing our presence at our greeter table. This will give us the opportunity to personally welcome the Evensong attendees and get to know them and encourage them to return. We will also be hosting some additional receptions (with wine!) after the evensong services that feature informal talks by church staff members and visiting musicians so that we can all get to know each other better.
And that’s all exciting, but I wanted to leave you with one important thought: Come. Come to our services and enjoy the musical experiences. Come to our concerts and enjoy the fantastic acoustics. Come listen to our organ recitals and our magnificent instrument. And bring a friend!
See you there!
Frank Borik

It now appears that instead of the Communion Table or the Cross, the Choir and Organ have become the central and guiding symbols in the worship and ministry at St. Paul’s. They are spectacular, indeed.
Thanks, Frank, for answering the call to lead this ministry. It’s high time to revitalize Friends of Cathedral Music.
