On Palm Sunday in 2018 Dean Penny introduced us to a statement, The Reclaiming Jesus Declaration, signed by Presiding Bishop Michael Curry as one of two dozen religious leaders, that listed six principles, grounded in the Holy Scriptures and addressed to church leaders, that seem especially relevant to issues in the life of the community beyond the Church.
As members of St. Paul’s Peace and Justice Ministry began discussing those principles, some in the group raised also the principles of the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber’s Poor People’s Campaign and the climate action movement. Following that the members of the Ministry came to the idea of distilling and combining many of these ideas into a single page synthesis intended to speak to our community rather than just to religious leaders.
The Principles for Social Justice were adopted by the Cathedral’s Chapter in early 2019 and this forum was presented at that time.
