As a coincidental follow up to last week’s SGIA article, the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial. Counties will host Deconstructing Incarceration, an important virtual forum on the need to reimagine public safety. This is particularly urgent due to the county having one of the highest jail death rates in the state.
Experts and advocates will talk about current conditions in San Diego County jails and explore potential alternatives to incarceration, including community-centered approaches to directly address mental health illness, substance use and poverty. During breakout sessions, there will be an opportunity to share thoughts and ideas on how to shift from mass incarceration to investing in our communities to ensure they are free, safe, healthy and thriving.
