POSITION DESCRIPTION :
Over the past several years St. Paul’s Cathedral’s ministry to children, youth, and families has steadily grown: some twenty children and ten youth attend our weekly programming and more than two dozen families are actively involved. St. Paul’s seeks an energetic and imaginative individual with a passion for children and education. In consultation with a member of the clergy, the Director is responsible for all aspects of the Cathedral’s programming for children and youth aged 0-18 and their families, including Sunday activities and seasonal programs, communication with the parish, oversight of volunteers, and coordination with parish staff.
Position Title: Director for Children, Youth, and Family Ministry
Status: Twenty hours a week, non-exempt
Compensation: $21/hour
Reports To: Clergy staff individual responsible for Children, Youth, and Family Ministry
Schedule: Sunday 8 to noon, other days/times flexible

Major Responsibilities: In consultation with supporting clergy, the director coordinates and oversees all aspects of Sunday morning Christian formation and worship for ages 0-18, including:
- Curriculum review, selection, and purchase (Godly Play and J2A are programs to which we are committed for the 4-8 and 13-18 age groups, respectively, but more research is needed on a curriculum for ages 9-12)
- Recruitment, training, and support of program leads and teachers who are passionate about and prepared for working with children and youth, and
- Overseeing, training, and evaluating teachers on a regular basis
- Registration of children and youth and maintaining appropriate records
- Working with the Youth Council and the clergy member, coordinate and oversee all youth activities, programs, and ministries, including confirmation and Senior Baccalaureate program
- Design and implement a summer Vacation Bible School for children
- Work with clergy and director of music in ensuring that worship opportunities are appropriate for children, youth, and families, which includes:
- Planning occasional special children- and youth-focused services
- Work with clergy to design and implement a regular family-friendly worship opportunity outside the normal Sunday worship services
- Provide opportunities for parents, grandparents, and families to engage in their own spiritual lives
- Working with clergy in developing Sunday morning formation programs for parents and grandparents
- Developing programs for families to use at home to go deeper in faith lives together
- Be a resource for families in questions of faith and parenting
- Work with staff and volunteers in developing, organizing, and implementing one intergenerational activities per month
- Ensure that all Safe Church principles, procedures, and policies are being followed.
- Oversee and support nursery program leads and caregivers, assisting with: recruiting volunteers, ensuring sufficient supplies and materials are maintained, maintaining procedures, and assisting as needed
- Build relationships at local (convocation), diocesan, and national levels, including:
- maintaining membership with Forma (network of Episcopal Christian Formation specialists)
- Working with key staff, develop and maintain operating budgets for all Children, Youth, and Family programming
- Communicate with key constituents (families, youth, teachers, youth leaders, etc.) using a variety of tools: email, texting, web, facebook, twitter, etc.
- Maintain children and youth spaces, making enhancements as see fit and as is necessary, making sure that all spaces are safe, friendly, and welcoming
- Attend weekly staff leadership meetings

Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred
- Preference given to candidates willing to make at least a three-year commitment to this position
- On-going attention to personal spiritual growth and growth in Christian discipleship
- Basic understanding of Holy Scriptures and Christian Doctrine as articulated in the Catechism found in the Book of Common Prayer, beginning on page 845
- Strong understanding of Christian Formation with interest in age-appropriate formation of children, youth, parents, and young families
- Understanding current trends, dynamics, and pressures in American society, churches and family structures
- Mastery of Outlook, Word, Excel, publishing programs, telephone, texting, and social media
- Prior experience in managing teams and implementing programming
- Criminal background and child abuse background checks required
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Ability to work on Sundays, Holy Days, occasional evenings, and occasional Saturdays
- Ability to climb stairs
- Ability to travel to locations in and around San Diego and surrounding areas
- Ability to travel nationally and internationally for mission trips, pilgrimages, and other trips
