Hungry for Lent?

Sisters and Brothers,

We live in a community where nearly one in six people are unsure whether they’ll have enough to eat each day. How can that be?What would it look like to love our hungry neighbors as ourselves this Lent?

There are no easy answers. Diving deeply into Lent’s holy disciplines of prayer, fasting, Scripture study, and self-examination will shed insight on our particular call to serve. (If you don’t know where to start with these Lenten disciplines, feel free to ask me or another St. Paul’s spiritual guide!)

I invite you to join me in participating in Episcopal Community Services (ECS) “Hungry for Lent?” program as well. Click here to sign up for weekly Lenten reflections that will help us learn more about hunger in San Diego. Commit to giving up one meal each week during Lent as a sign to ourselves and to others that our joys and struggles are bound closely with those of our neighbors. And donate what you would have spent on that meal to support ECS programs serving the homeless and the mentally ill.

Donations can be mailed to ECS at 401 Mile of Cars Way, Suite 350, National City, CA 91950, or they can also be made via credit card online by clicking here. Contact Deann Ayer at ECS if you’re having trouble.

Ready for more? Consider this recent blog post by fellow parishioner Mary Doak on why we do outreach as Christians. Then let’s get together to chat! I’d love to hear more about your sense of call.

Ash Wednesday invited us to confront our own mortality. May we live each day in deep thanks and find fresh strength to struggle on behalf of all of God’s blessed creation!

Christ’s peace,

Colin
