The Naming of Kumeyaay Beach

Sacred Ground In Action Initiative

On July 14, the Port of San Diego Board voted unanimously to honor our Kumeyaay neighbors by naming a previously unnamed beach in Spanish Landing: Kumeyaay Beach.

Both the testimony from audience members – Kumeyaay and allies – and individual Board members was very moving, Tribal leaders endorsed the vote as not only recognition for their thousands of years as caretakers of the land but also as a vehicle for educating community members and visitors about the Kumeyaay people and their continued presence and contributions here. Several board members humbly expressed their honor to vote for a recognition that was long overdue. One acknowledged the high bar required to name any landmark, and admitted that these First People of the land far surpassed that hurdle.

Much reconciliation and recognition needs to be made. The naming of Kumeyaay Beach is a good beginning.
